There is a property near us (a bungalow, of course) called ‘September Dawn’. Given how long it has been called that, ‘December Dawn’ or even ‘New Year’s Eve’ would be more accurate.
September Dawn for us was those heady years of early retirement when life was a perpetual holiday and ours to enjoy. I reckon it’s October Dawn now: life is still good but more of a mixed bag. I have been an attorney and then executor for my mother and found that not everything can be done remotely, such as keeping an elderly person and a house in good working order from 250 miles away. We have celebrated our Golden Wedding in style with extended family in private coaches on the Great Central Railway, Leicestershire, then just the two of us in Orkney, where I did my elective. Our daughter and son-in-law have celebrated their Silver Wedding in more muted fashion because of her Long Covid, and their children are at/off to university (but still happy to see us – wow!). We are now trying to keep up with our son’s children, one in primary school, the other at secondary. Family might not keep us young (keep it real!) but definitely slows our ageing and makes life much more enjoyable.
