John Burn

Not much change in the Burn household. Linda and I still live in Sanderson Rd, Jesmond; I returned after retirement 9 years ago and am still working “part time” as Professor of Clinical Genetics, nearing the end of 34 years in that job. The research into preventing hereditary cancer with aspirin is going well and will hit the news just before our get together

I’m revalidated and still a part time consultant in genetics-41 years for that one. I do a day a week as chair of Research and Innovation for the NE&Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service.   I chair a biotech company called QuantuMDx Ltd born at the Centre for Life 16 years ago making a portable battery operated DNA testing machine called the QPoc. I still have a few other little jobs to fill the gaps!

A surprising knighthood in 2010 has yet to get us any preferential service in restaurants.

Linda trained as a teacher before Danielle and Jamie were born. She later gave up her job in haematology running a lymphoma register in 2006 to become a “working grandmother” for Danielle’s four children involving commutes to Scotland for 8 years. They are now 13-18 living near Canterbury and with their parents are the famous Marsh family singing parody songs on social media with over 200,000 YouTube followers. It began with a comedy version of “one day more” for Linda’s birthday at the start of lockdown which had millions of views and led to multiple TV appearances. They have a series of live gigs coming up this summer.

Jamie has had a more challenging journey which we can recount over a beer.

Our daily routine revolves around our bordoodle (collie poodle cross) called Tilly
