A refugee from the realm of Ivan, I eventually gained a consultant post at Aintree Hospital , Liverpool in vascular, emergency and trauma surgery. I was involved in training as Surgery Programme Director before becoming Head of the School of Surgery for Cheshire and Merseyside. This I resigned in 2014 to take up the Medical Director role at Aintree until retirement in 2015.
In 1988, my whistle blowing article in the Sunday Telegraph magazine, contributed to the introduction of ‘Calman’ training for junior hospital doctors
In 2010, I initiated the first consultant delivered Emergency General Surgery service and set up the Cheshire and Merseyside Trauma Centre at Aintree, the best centre outside London at the time.
On retirement Ann and I moved south to Mickleton, Gloucestershire to be nearer our girls and now six grandchildren. Joining the local choir revived my interest in folk music and I sing regularly with Meon Singers and the monthly village folk night.
